What is Business Analysis?

Business Analysis is the set of tasks and techniques used to work as a liaison among stakeholders in order to understand the structure, policies and operations of an organisation, and recommend solutions that enables the organisation to achieve its goals.

  • Business analysis focuses on identifying requirements in the context of helping organizations to achieve strategic goals.
  • Business analysis involves tasks that include investigation, scoping and definition of requirements for new or altered systems.
  • Business analysis is an important part of the system design process; business analysts along with system analysis identify the needs or requirements of the clients.

Many business analysts often perform several of these roles, and therefore this position is best filled by an individual with a broad skill set.

Business analysis is distinct from financial analysis, project management, quality assurance, organizational development, testing, training and documentation development. However, depending on the organization, a business analysis professional may perform some or all of these related functions.

Who is a Business Analyst?

Business Analyst is a new-economy job in a company that acts as a liaison between business people who have a business problem and technology people who know how to create automated solutions.

Business Analysts are responsible for identifying business needs, requirements development and requirements management. Specifically, the Business Analyst elicits, analyzes, validates and documents business, organizational and/or operational requirements.

The Business Analyst is a key facilitator within an organization, acting as a bridge between the client, stakeholders and the solutions team.

The International Institute of business Analysis has the following definition for the role:

“A business analyst works as a liaison among stakeholders in order to elicit, analyze, communicate and validate requirements for changes to business processes, policies and information system. The business analyst understands business problems and opportunities in the context of the requirements and recommends solutions that enable the organization to achieve its goals.”

Business Analyst needs to be business savvy and have a very good understanding of technology. While it is helpful for a Business Analyst to be familiar with the industry in which they are working, industry specific information can generally be acquired while working on a project.

Business Analyst must be able to build a cohesive team and possess a strong customer focus. On a project, Business Analysts work closely with the Project Manager and assist with the project planning. They are responsible for the requirements planning and with the gathering and analysis of information. The Business Analyst documents the business requirements which express what actions the business must take in order to resolve a business issue and deliver work products through the project lifecycle.

Business Analyst will collaborate with business stakeholders throughout the organization to ensure high quality, on-time deliverables and seamless communication. They usually work across a wide variety of roles, developing a diversified skill set which can lead to high level positions within a company.

Who can be a Business Analyst?

Any high-school graduate or post-graduate who is enthusiastic about business as well as technology with good analytical, communication, presentation, and documentation skills can become a Business Analyst.

Minimum high school education and proven skills of Business Analysis is required.

Career as a Business Analyst

Business Analysts can work in different industries and may have different titles and roles. Some of these include:

  • A Business Consultant works at a high level to analyze the stakeholder´s business objectives, recommend and develop solutions to address their business problem
  • Business Process Analyst is responsible for analyzing and defining business processes both “As Is” and “To Be”
  • Data Analyst is responsible for logical data model
  • Business Architect models the whole business in terms of goals, data, process, organization
  • A Requirements Analyst/Specifier works at a lower level to identify, analyze and document the business requirements and deliver work products through the project life cycle
  • Systems Analyst translates the business requirements into System/Functional requirements, which are then passed to Application Developers
  • Management Consultant assists stakeholders with understanding their strategic goals and how best to accomplish them.

Many business analysts often perform several of these roles, and therefore this position is best filled by an individual with a broad skill set.

Depending on their years of experience, Senior Business Analysts may play a lead role in the strategic evaluation of an organization´s current systems and processes. In addition, they work at a high level to analyze a client´s business, then recommend and develop solutions to address their business challenge.

The course approach is a case–study–oriented approach, wherein every session will have a case study assignment that the participant has to assess and implement all the topics covered in that particular session. And at the end of the course – a project work, where the participant has to implement all the topics covered in the entire course. This way, the main objective of the course – a real–time implementation of a complete BA life cycle, is achieved twice.

The course typically contains 20+ hours of sessions conducted either on regular basis from Monday to Friday or on weekend´s basis (Saturday & Sunday) for 4 weeks, 2 classes per week with class duration of 2 hours each most probably early in the mornings or late in the evenings. This way, it will not disturb your everyday job and can spend more time on assessing the case studies during the week, whenever you get time.
